Don’t miss out on a great evening!
In addition to Wednesdays live performance the summer’s line-up continues with Liteside on Saturday the 24th September
A firm favourite at Caffe Portico, Liteside are a Newark based band and have been playing together for the past 8 years. Their six piece outfit (3 horns, 3 rhythm) have played in all the Newark jazz festivals and at Caffe Portico on many occasion.
Liteside’s smooth, melodic tunes mean you don’t have to be a jazz buff to enjoy them; they call it “jazz for people who don’t think they like jazz”. Their foot-tapping swing & Latin tunes and smooth ballads make for sweet listening. Think Duke Ellington meets Jools Holland and you’ll be in the right area.
Liteside have played at Caffe Portico on many occasions and never fail to impress, so hurry to get your tickets! Again they’re only £6 each, available from the Caffe.
Franc Cinelli was a big hit at his debut appearance at Caffe portico, so we’re delighted to have him back on the 1st October.
Bucking the trend with his free-wheeling alternative folk, Franc Cinelli is the songwriters’ songwriter. From up-tempo torch songs to blues laden road journals and love-struck serenades to defiant, prison outlaw ballads; Franc has carved his own musical path.
His new album The Marvel Age has been called “A roosty, bluesy, folky confection” by R2 Magazine and “A road album evoking images of long distance car journeys through barren wastelands” By the Acoustic Magazine.
Another bargain, tickets are only £6! Available at the Caffe.
As always all our music nights will be accompanied by a specially prepared menu for the evening and as many of you know the combination of good food and music is a real treat.
At each event doors open at 7pm, food will be served from 7.30pm and the music to begin at 8.30pm.
So, make room in your calendars for some truly great nights of music at Caffe Portico.

After the last season of music ended we have had a short break to establish our pizza nights on a weekly basis. Now we are serving pizza every Friday. However in that time we have had multiple enquiries about when the next music nights will be held. You spoke and we listened. So, the next music will be on Wednesday 17th August, followed by a new programme of live acts for you all to enjoy. To kick us off we will be welcoming the fantastic duo Jinski.
Recently they appeared live on BBC 1 The One Show and were featured on Channel 4 News. They also just opened for Lindisfarne at The Palace of Arts Newcastle on 3rd June.
Based in Newcastle Upon-Tyne, JINSKI are song writer Stephen Wegrzynski and musician Dave Kennedy. Their music touches the borders of folk, country, and pop, keeping alive the song writing tradition whilst remaining resolutely modern. JINSKI tell stories that capture the mundane and the magic in everyday life.
They have supported O’Hooley & Tidow, Martin & Eliza Carthy and The Poozies last year and headlined the 12 Bar Club in London, also playing on the main stage at Broadstairs Folk festival.
They have just supported US band The Grahams on several of their dates last November at The Met Bury & The Musician in Leicester.
Their music has been described as ‘Folk for Modern Ears’ – MAVERICK magazine
In addition they had an article in Feb/Mar R2 Rock n Reel magazine:
If you would like to hear them in action this is a link to their most recent live video:

For those who don’t know yet, a few months ago Sim built his very own Wood Fired Pizza oven. With help from his friend Adam from VDuo Motorcycles he put it into the back of a Piaggio Ape. Now we are bringing you Portico Pizza Nights, where we serve the very best in traditional Neapolitan pizza.
We make our Pizzas by following classic Neapolitan methods. Sticking to traditional flavours, we hand-stretch the dough, top it with simple fresh ingredients and cook it at over 400C in the wood fired oven, giving it that authentic smoky flavour.
The first few Pizza nights were a real success and we are so happy with the support from all our guests. Aside from the food, the best thing is definitely the atmosphere. Come and relax with friends and enjoy a dining experience perfect for an easy Friday evening.
Over the next few weeks and months to come, we will increase the frequency of our Pizza nights in response to demand, so don’t worry if you miss one. If you want to try fantastic Neapolitan style Pizza, let us know and we can book you a table at the next evening, which will be on the 1st of April. Call Sim on 07956653156 to reserve a table.
Acoustic roots duo, Mambo Jambo, will be taking you on an intriguing and joyous musical journey mixing elements and sounds from world, folk and jazz on the 20th May. Featuring music from New Orleans, Cuba, Brazil and Eastern Europe, as well as cajun, bluegrass, boogie, and their own compositions. Between the two of them they carry with them more instruments than the average orchestra – Pete on guitar, vocal, banjo, percussion, tres (traditional Cuban guitar), ukulele, accordion, suitcase and Frankie on saxophone, clarinet, flute, guitar, vocal, and percussion.
Mambo Jambo have firmly established themselves as one of the country’s finest live acts, the pair play a bewildering array of acoustic instruments – all played with flair and enthusiasm. To describe their music as ‘feel-good’ is an understatement – I guarantee it will give everyone a lift after the winter blues” – Martin Peirson, Processed Pea Folk Club
‘Mambo Jambo are quite simply two of the most talented and entertaining musicians around. Their welcome return visits to the Hunsley Acoustic Music sessions are always a sell-out way in advance of their concerts which is a tribute to them as artists! The audience never cease to be enthralled and captivated by their versatility and their warm, entertaining delivery and exceptional talent. Once seen…never forgotten!!!’ – Will Richardson, Hunsley Acoustic Music
“Mambo Jambo- Wonderful sound” – Gareth Evans, BBC Radio Sheffield
“The sheer enthusiasm & joy of their music along with their wonderful musicianship & great stage presence combine to create an act that will undoubtedly go down a storm wherever they play.” – Jim McLaughlin, Musicport Festival

There is going to be a change in the line up for the April 9th gig at Caffe Portico. Ryan Farmer was booked to play however due to unforeseen circumstances he is unable to perform. Nevertheless, the show must go on, and the gig will be going ahead.
You have come to expect a high calibre of acts at Caffe Portico, and we don’t intend to disappoint. The new musician will be the gifted Jack Conman.
Jack combines the percussive potential of his guitar with heartfelt lyrics:
“if you’re an audience member, there are a fair few things that you can turn your attention to, from the technique of the playing, the melodies from both the guitar and the vocals, the lyrics and the emotion behind the song, and of course the foot tapping rhythm. The thing I think is the most important, however, is that the songs that you play, whether you’ve written them or if you’re covering, strike some form of emotional chord with the musician and the audience.”
You can check out some his first official video here:
In addition, he will be supported by Joseph Knight, another very talented musician who can get you warmed up for the main act.
Ticket prices will only be £5, tickets available from the Caffe, call 07956653156 for more details.
Doors open at 7pm, a specially prepared menu will be available before the performance, food served from 7.30pm, music at 8.30pm.
We hope to see as many of you as possible, don’t forget to keep an eye out for the next upcoming events.
Ryan Farmer has taken influence from sounds of the Mississippi Delta, the traditional folk of the Appalachian Mountains and the Honky Tonk of a Texas bar room and will be bringing his unique blend of gospel, country and blues here, to us at Caffè Portico on the 9th April. So prepare for songs to make you dance, drink and cry in the space of a few minutes.
After the success of his debut Worries & Troubles in 2014 (I’m Not From London Records), Ryan is back with more tales of whiskey, women and worry. Ryan’s music has been praised across the midlands for the last two years:
“In fact, if it’s modern blues you’re looking for, you can’t go far wrong with this record. Chuck it on while you’re having a bottle of beer and a cigarette, then listen to it again when your head’s pounding the next morning.” – Leftlion
Tickets are only £5 from the Caffe, call 07956653156 to reserve tickets.
